Evaluation Q1 - Yzabelle Celosa

1. In what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

CONVENTIONS OF A MUSIC VIDEO:

CONVENTIONS OF THE POP GENRE:

MISE-EN-SCENE (Visual Motifs)
Big locations, mainstream & fashionable outfits, props that link with the lyric or vibrant colours scene in each shot whether through makeup or lighting

LUTS (Light Up The Sky):
LOCATION
The locations that were chosen to create my music video are very contrasting. Therefore, I was able to work with a collection of scenes with lots of greenery, lights and a busy city. I found that this variety of different locations helped create the vibrant and energetic ambiance that is seen in the pop genre.

NORTHOLT HILLS
Perfect scenery to get the skyline and lights from the motorway and buildings at night.

RICHMOND PARK
Surrounded by greenery and nature; pleasant scenery.

 PICCADILLY CIRCUS
A very vibrant and busy atmosphere. With the constant changing of the backdrop and busy people traveling behind; it creates the perfect lively mood for the genre.

PROPS
This was my initial plan for what props I would have wanted to include in my pop music video... However, due to having a very low production budget, I was only able to get a few. Nevertheless, I still found that the props used in the overall final cut of the video were successful in creating the atmosphere of the pop genre.
PROP INITIAL IDEAS:

PROPS USED:

SUBVERTING THE POP GENRE CONVENTIONS
1) A convention seen in many pop genre videos is the notion of the 'male gaze' on women.
In my music video, I did not include this as I wanted it to represent teen life full of enjoyment and energy and to invite the audience to feel this vibe.
These are examples of pop artists that included voyeurism in their music videos...
Katy Perry - California Gurls

Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop

 Nicki Minaj - Anaconda
Another convention of the pop genre (in terms of mise-en-scene), is the use of quite heavy makeup and bold colours on the face.
An example for this is the use of bold lipstick on many artists in today's contemporary pop culture...
The use of the colour red on her lipstick has connotations of being provocative, daring and again creating the notion of the 'male gaze'. This juxtaposes with her white outfit as white usually has connotations of innocence and purity. Perhaps, this highlights the wildness of young people.
Although I wanted our main artist to look natural, light and effortless, this was still seen in some of the members of the cast...

MUSIC VIDEO CONVENTIONS
Technical conventions:

ANCILLARY TEXTS

Digipak:

Magazine Advert:

From researching real media print products in the pop genre, I created this digipak/poster in order to conform to the pop conventions and create a realistic finish.

Print Products - Evaluation 1 - Yzabelle Celosa A2 from samanthacelosa

  • The pop genre has a typically a very lively and energetic ambiance, therefore, it was crucial for my advert to include clear, bold fonts and colour as well as my digipak.
FONT AND DESIGN
Keeping the fonts and colours of the text the same for the entire digipak was important to make my digipak look professional whilst still conforming to the genre of our music (pop). Again, I researched real pop album back covers to guide me with the design.

IMAGE CHOICE
In most of my digipak photos, the location shots and any photos without the 'artist' is edited to the similar filter where the image is grained. I wanted to highlight the idea of 'light up the sky' using this, by blurring and graining the image, the images of the lights became more glowy and vibrant as they become more unfocused. (This is also seen in our music video, particularly in the location shots).
Also, in contrast to this, I wanted the text to stand out from the photograph so that it would be easily read.
