Evaluation Question

Evaluation Question 3 - Christopher Marques

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Audience Feedback - Group of Teenagers (Target Audience)

Audience Feedback - Teacher Feedback

How audience feedback shaped my Music Video:

When first coming up with a plan to create this music video I felt that the lyrics of the song would go well with a party scene, when i pitched this idea to members of my target audience the feedback that i received was not what I wanted to hear but was reasonable. The feedback that I received was that to throw a party scene to be in my music video seemed like an unrealistic idea which would be difficult to materialise with such a low budget and not having an actual venue to have the party at.

Audience Feedback

When I arranged a group of my target audience to watch my music video I wanted to get people who fit the target audience, that way I would be able to get a clear view if they feel that my product fits in within the genre and if they like it or not, and with their feedback whether it was helpful criticism or general compliments i would take it and try to make improvements from it, even the smallest things such as the lip syncing being out of sync by the smallest of margins, it was still an imperfection which was pointed out and i wanted my products to be perfect.

Teacher Feedback

The reason behind me getting feedback from my teacher, is because other than wanting to hear how effective it is at attracting my target audience but a view from other audiences, when seeking feedback from my teacher I was able to act upon slight faults that were pointed out which led to improvements being made to my final product.

How did you use new technologies in the construction of research, planning and evaluation stages?

The use of new media technology is important to becoming a media producer/creator  , to retrieve material from the audience , and to consume material from institutions.

By having the advantage in modern day to be able to use such advanced new media technology, it has become a big stepping stone in the music industry to attract an audience. For example, for my A2 Coursework I am currently using Blogger to present my work to an audience , much like artists in the music industry who are trying to get discovered or to promote their music to their target audience. If I were to promote my artist Ada Satka, new media technology would be very important because, platforms such as Twitter , Facebook and Youtube are the most common ways in which people listen to music...take Justin Bieber for example, he started making youtube videos just to showcase his talent to family and friends , but little to his knowledge did he know that his future record label scout would find him and turn him into the global successor that he is to date. In relation to the construction of research stage ,I also used youtube to find my unsigned artist

Although new media technology proves to be highly successful in helping artist reach their potential, I on the other hand have found new media technology to be the gateway to making a convincing music video ,digipak and magazine advert for a unsigned artist. For example, new media technology led me to....

Editing

  • Print products-  I used photoshop , because I wanted them to look professional and as convincing as real media texts such as Rihanna’s “Loud” and Taylor Swift’s “Red” ,which might be found conventional and online outlets like HMV and Amazon.- My initial idea to use photoshop was to airbrush my artist because that is stereotypically what many people believe is all that goes into the work of print products, but after researching official examples , I understood that I had to use it creatively and effectively to brighten still images, blur shadows and enhance features of the artist and the background , like a traffic light and scenery lit with bright lights to make the products stand out to its target audience and conform to the lyrics “light up the sky”.
    Taylor Swift's "RED"

    Rihanna's "Loud"
  • When producing my print products, I was inspired by real media texts such as Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” because of the bright colours and effortless portrayal of the artist. In my opinion being able to use photoshop developed my skills because it is a very professional piece of software that can either work with a product or against it. In comparison to real media texts such as Beyonce’s “I AM SASHA FIERCE” digipak and Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage dream” magazine advert , I think my print products look convincing because of my access to new media technology.
    Ellie Gouldings "Lights"

    Beyonce's "I am Sasha Fierce"

    Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream"
  • I made a video using iMovie highlighting some of the editing techniques and shots feautured in "Light up the sky"
  • Digipak I made during the research stage of my A2 coursework using new media technology like Fireworks and photoshop. As well as using, the internet (google ,blogger, youtube) to research the artist and their audience and present my findings.  By doing this I was able to experiment with different softwares before I made my final digipak for my unsigned artists. In the example below I used Fireworks and Photoshop to create the Iggy Azalea digipak. And when it came to analysing a real media text example of a digipak, I chose to analyse Chris Browns "F.A.M.E" ,and to do this I used new media technology such as powerpoint and slideshare.
Iggy Azalea & Chris Brown Digipak's

Blogger

  • Without the access to new media technology, I would not have been able to share my work on “Blogger” to a potentially global audience, which is a website where I can receive feedback ,gain followers and explore other blogs within the online community.
  • I used various websites such as Youtube and google to research the genres I chose from my music video and thriller opening , as well as print products examples and templates
  • By sharing my research and planning and evaluation online , I was able to use digital technologies like iMovie , Prezi ,GIFs(moving images),voicethread and powerpoint to present my findings and overall view of each media product, which I would then import onto my blog.

Camera
  • I used a Canon DSLR EOS 650D because of it’s HD quality , which made the outcome of both products very professional and clear with no cracks in the sound or fuzzy vision. As well as this, the camera had a flip screen which let me see exactly what was being shot ,placing me in the role as the director. For example, in "Light up the sky" I was in control of what and who was allowed into the frame, by using the rule of thirds.
  • Before filming i was able to adjust the light balance on camera, rather than doing it when editing because of how technology has advanced.

  • I was able to change the cinematic style through mise-en-scene because a narrative was not the focus of the video, the props, shooting style and location were.  So by using a DSLR Canon camera , I was able to use new media technology to shoot inspired shots , as well as creative shots that I thought would work

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Audience
-Made up of individuals who bring social and cultural experiences to their interpretation of any text.

I made a video on iMovie to evaluate the audience feedback I received throughout the task.

Focus group response to the party scene

Overall, my audience really did not respond positively to the party scene idea, because of their views of reality and "fake" reality. It would have been fun to do this idea, but realistically it would not have looked professional when it came to editing the footage and producing the final cut. I think this is because I did not have the same funds in comparison to hollywood productions , which are able to hire extras and a professional crew to make it look professional. This is because, initially i wanted to do a party scene similar to project X , but taking into consideration my audience's response, it was best to scrap the idea and think of something more realistic.
Project X -Party scene (fantasy, unrealistic) inspiration

Real media texts

I conducted a Questionnaire to find out who my target audience was.....

 Theorists

  • Stuart et al : Audience can choose how they interpret text (In comparison to my media text, the audience can decide how my video makes them feel, whether it be happy, nostalgic etc..)
  • Laura Mulvey: "The male gaze" the reason why the pop genre has a high percentage of male viewers (In contrast to my media text , my artist is not presented in a sexual way)
Audience feedback to Digipak
I asked 40 people of my target audience which print products they preffered and why. This is because their feedback will always be important because they are who i aim my products at, and if they do not like it they will not buy/listen to it. Overall, their feedback on each print product helped me decide what makes the final digipak and, from this i realised how significant audience feed back is when making products that are going to be  part of a promotion package. So this also shows that in relation to a promotion package, the audience have considered what is memorable to them and what print product links to the artist.

Audience feedback from first viewing

What did i learn from this.....
I think I have met my audience expectations fully because from the feedback on the final cut , my target audience were able to give genuine feedback , which led me to re-evaluate my ideas and this resulted in the substitution of the party scene, for a small scene to represent friendship and fun. As a result of this, the use of location and a small amount of extras convinced my audience that the video did in fact conform to the pop genre , despite doubts in the beginning that it would just look cliche and unprofessional. I also found that even though I subverted the genre by not conforming to the use of Laura Mulvey's "Male gaze"  theory , it did not have an impact on how the males in my key demographic viewed the print products and music video nor, did it make them not want to watch it because the protagonist was not being sexualised. So therefore, this has taught me that in order for a female in the pop genre to be successful in using a promotional package , they do not have sexualise themselves in order to gain attraction from men.

Therefore, the significance of audience feedback on the initial idea turned out to be beneficial ,in regards to how our target audience perceived the final cut. If I had produced this main text without receiving feedback from my target audience before hand, I would have lost sight of how I was trying to attract my chosen audience to watch my video, and what they would think of the video whilst watching it because.

Evaluation Q2:Genice-Marie John-Lewis

How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?

Main and ancillary texts
Music video

My print products and music video for "Light up the sky" are used as a promotional package for the release of an album. Having established who my audience was, I was able to attract them by producing a magazine advert and an advertisement trailer for music video, digipak and magazine advert as a package. For example, before these main and ancillary texts would be released an advert for the digipak and music video would be presented to the audience ...

Advert

It was important that my main and ancillary texts were used as a package together , so the audience could make instant connections between each of the three. For example, the photos across the lyric booklet are from a photoshoot conducted in the same location (Northolt Hills) , so it would be easy for the audience to recognise the album advert. As well as this, the digipak front cover is used in the magazine advert, so the audience know what they are looking for, and from seeing the magazine advert they would be able to make links from the similar images they have seen.

Through the use of *synergy  I was able to connect my main and ancillary texts by..
  •  Images of the artist occur in all three products (promotes the artist)
  •  Simplicity & Plain colours used for the font
  •  Neutral/subtle colours used throughout each image on all products (eg-orange,warm yellow and maroon  tones, sunset colours)
Synergy
- The simultaneous release of different products to boost them both.
-can be used by bigger companies(often media conglomerates,eg-SONY,MICROSOFT) to promote linked products across different media , to accumulate a larger profit

However, to increase the synergy of my products I could have ...

  • Used the same font for the artist's name across my ancillary texts, as well as including the artist's name in the main product , to give the artist recognition , as my target audience agreed it would not be easier to recognise the artist, but it would be that much easier to familiarise themselves with the products because , a different product could be promoted each time.
  • The use of micro elements such as mise-en-scene so the audience are able to easily identify the artist's face or body if they saw her. For example, in the pop industry Rita Ora is known for her trademark red lipstick ,Miley Cyrus is known for her elaborate facial expressions and provocative one piece's,Jessy J for her infamous block fringe bob hairstyle and One Direction are not only known for the good looks, they are also known for the 'silly' attempt at a dance routine in many of their videos

Target audience
From talking to my target audience about my products they said that being fans of the pop genre, the texts would appeal to them because they conform to what they expect. As well as this, they praised the fact that the dance scene in the main text was short enough to look realistic , and that even             though extras are a main part of the text, the ancillary texts and shots of the artist on her own made it clear to them that it was not a pop group , it was a solo artist. This is because the digipak and magazine advert present the artist as the centre of attention for the audience to focus on.I also found out that by showing my target audience the advert for the main text first made them want to see it because the image used intrigued them.

Final product
Overall , I enjoy watching my main text as much as I enjoyed producing it,therefore making it my favourite product to produce. Although, creating the ancillary texts using synergy with the influence of my music video was an interesting task , even though it did prove to be quite challenging at times. Both my main and ancillary texts are successfully linked using synergy because the audience can make links between the three products , mostly because the location the images were shot in are frequently used in the main text. For example , the artist overlooking the city/suburbs and lip syncing in an iconographic location such as London.

To conclude, I think that my final products were a success and I am pleased with how they turned out out ,as well as how they portrayed the artist.
